This miniature landscape brooch depicts hillsides and hedgerows in a turquoise blue and brown. The design is inspired by the countryside where I live and work – rural Ceredigion in beautiful West Wales. As with all my jewellery it is made and decorated entirely by hand.
After forming my brooches from fine white clay, I imprint the texture and design. When dry, I sand the sides and round off the corners to ensure they are super smooth to the touch. They then have their first firing. Next I paint them using under-glazes and apply a transparent glaze before firing again to earthenware. My brooches are glazed on the front and sides and are very smooth whilst retaining the texture of the imprinted design. The result is a pleasantly tactile item.
